What are the functions and roles of the Syariah and Harmonisation Division Attorney General's Chambers?
The main function of the Syariah Division is to give legal advice and comments on matters relating to the implementation, enforcement and drafting of Syariah laws at the Federal level referred to by the Government and its agencies. Among the issues which are often referred to this Division are issues on conflict of jurisdiction between civil and Syariah courts, such as change of religion and conversion to Islam by one of the non-muslim spouses and issues relating to the interpretation of the Constitution pertaining to the religion of Islam, gender equality, human rights, enforcement of Syariah laws, implementation of Islamic family laws, development of Syariah judiciary system and Islamic transaction (muamalat), banking and finance.
Syariah Division also undertakes research on legal provisions of the Federal laws to ensure that there is no conflict between the Federal law and the Syariah laws. Should there be any inconsistency between the provisions of the Federal and the Syariah laws, proposals will be submitted to amend the relevant provisions so as to ensure that the Federal law and the Syariah law can be harmonised. Apart from that, this Division also organises Community Syariah Meetings to discuss any issues which arise from time to time on the enforcement and the drafting of Syariah laws.

Yes. Agency supervised under the Syariah and Harmonisation Division of the Attorney General's Chambers is the Islamic Religious Development of Malaysia (JAKIM). Meanwhile, officers supervised by this Division are the Legal Officers serving as Assistant State Legal Advisor (Syariah) of the State Legal Advisors’ Office.
What is the form of supervision carried out by the Syariah and Harmonisation Division Attorney General's Chambers?
Supervision is carried out specifically by the Muamalat and Inspectorate Unit (Unit IV). In this regard, Unit IV will undertake to monitor monthly report of the Legal Officers attached to JAKIM and officers serving as Assistant State Legal Advisor (Syariah) of the State Legal Advisors’ Office.
