Legislative Framework
  • Malaysia established its national human rights body called the Suruhanjaya Hak Asasi Manusia or the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) on 9 September 1999 pursuant to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999.
  • In fulfilling its obligations under the CRC Malaysia has enacted the Child Act 2001. The Act was drafted based on the principles of the CRC and came into force on 1 August 2002.
  • On 24 May 2006, Malaysia presented its combined initial and second periodic report to the United Nations Committee on CEDAW. To read the concluding comments of the committee, Click here.
  • Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution was amended on 1 August 2001 to include the word “gender” pursuant to Malaysia’s obligation under CEDAW. As a result of this amendment, all existing laws are reviewed to ensure compliance with the paramount principles of gender equality enshrined under CEDAW.
